Wayne Edwin Burnaugh was born to Aaron O’Neil and Ellen Mildred (Chambers) Burnaugh on January 9, 1922 northeast of Walters, OK and departed this life in Duncan, OK on August 14, 2018 at the age of 96 years, 7 months and 5 days.

 

Wayne grew up northeast of Walters where he attended Lone Star School before finishing at Walters High School. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during WWII and soon returned to farming. He married Ruby Mae Sutton on June 24, 1950 and to the union a son, Gregory Taylor, was born on November 11, 1951. They made their home on the farm until moving into Walters in 1969 for Greg’s senior year, but Wayne continued farming. Mae preceded him in death in 1976.

 

Wayne later married Margaret Lorene “Bobbie” Haskin on May 15, 1979 at Wichita Falls, TX. They made their home in Walters and enjoyed 10 years together before her death in 1989. He later married Hattie Simpson on May 25, 1990 and the couple soon moved to Duncan, OK in 1991 around the time he retired from farming and sold his equipment. They enjoyed 27 years together, including the last 5 of those at Canoe Brook Assisted Living, until her death in December of 2017. Wayne has lived at Elk Crossing in Duncan since May of this year.

 

Wayne had been a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Walters until moving to Duncan where he and Hattie joined Immanuel Baptist Church. Through the years he enjoyed fishing trips to the coast and fishing in general, as well as, bird hunting, dominos, cards, gardening, singing and dancing. He went on cruises, made and trip to Hawaii with friends and for many years enjoyed taking the travel trailer to New Mexico with day trips to Old Mexico.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Gwen Black, Barbara Reed and Chloe Ann Mowles; all 3 wives, Mae, Bobbie and Hattie; and his son, Greg who preceded him in May of 2018.

 

Survivors include his granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Krisa Mae Bryant and Michael of Edmond, OK; four great-granddaughters, Caitlin, Isabel, Ava, and Sutton Bryant of Edmond; and Hattie’s beloved family, son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Vicki Simpson of Edmond; daughter, Tammy Graham of Duncan, OK; 4 grandchildren, Mandy Carpenter and husband Brian of Clovis, NM, Taryn Palesano and husband T.J. of Marysville, OH, Keenan Graham and wife Lacey of Tulsa, OK, and Kris Graham of Oklahoma City; 6 great grandchildren, Max and Luke Carpenter, Hadley and London Palesono, Emmerson and Kinsler Graham; many other extended family members and beloved friends.
