Funeral Services at First Baptist Church, Lawton, OK, Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., Nephews Jim D. Prock and Joe Sanders officiating with interment in the Walters Cemetery. Visitation on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hart-Wyatt Chapel.
Sue Jean (Cavness) Schumpert was born to James B. and Ethel (McCarty) Cavness on October 19, 1933 in Hollis, OK and departed this life in Oklahoma City on February 17, 2018 at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 29 days.
Sue grew up on a cotton farm north of Hollis, OK. She graduated from Ron High School in 1951 and went on to receive her BA from Southwestern State.
On August 6, 1954, she married Billy Don Schumpert at First Baptist Church Hollis, OK. They made their home at Anadarko and she taught music for a semester at Ft. Cobb before starting her family. They moved to Pernell, Anadarko, Velma-Alma and then Walters. She began teaching again at Hulen during its final 2 years before closing then taught at Walters for the next 11 years, including 1 year of 5th grade and 10 years in the 1st grade. In 1975 the family moved to the current home at Chattanooga and she taught 1st grade until 1981. She spent the next 12 years or so working at her son’s accounting firm in Walters.
Sue was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawton. She loved music and was a good singer as she sang in the choir at FBC Lawton for many years and had previously enjoyed singing in a Ladies trio at FBC Walters. She enjoyed attending her kids and grandkids activities through the years and watching Doug’s basketball teams. She loved to read and was an avid gardener. Sue and Bill also enjoyed traveling during retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ethel Cavness; her husband, Bill Schumpert in 2017; and 2 sisters, Peggy Prock and Twyla Beth Sanders.
Survivors include 4 sons, Dr. Don Schumpert, Jr. and wife Ginny of Tulsa, OK, David Schumpert and wife Pamela of Walters, Doug Schumpert and wife Christy of Anadarko, and Dr. Mark Schumpert and Jackie Rawlins of Grove, OK; her sister, Barbara Brinkman of Altus, OK; her brother-in-law and his wife, G.H. Schumpert, Jr. and Judy of Lawton; 9 grandchildren and spouses, Samuel Schumpert, Leah Callahan and Tony, William Schumpert, Sarah Lum and Justin, Lindsey Schumpert, Kristin Daugherty and Hayden, Blake Schumpert, McKinsey Schumpert and fiancé Troy Reddoch, and Kelsey Schumpert; 8 great grandchildren, Lettie and Hadley Schumpert, Merritt and Nora Lum, Crue Shortt, Desi, Mady and Haven Brown; many other relatives and a host of former students and friends.
