Scottie Simpson

March 3, 1942 — September 12, 2017

Funeral Service at First United Methodist Church, Walters, Friday, September 15, at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Brantley Tillery officiating with burial in the Walters Cemetery. Visitation on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters. Memorial donations can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 202 E. Oklahoma, Walters, OK 73572.

 


Hubert Scottie Simpson was born to Hubert T and Frances Ellen (Reece) Simpson on March 3, 1942 at Comanche, OK and departed this life in Lawton, OK on September 12, 2017 at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 9 days.

 

Scottie grew up at Walters, graduating from WHS in 1960. He attended Cameron College for a year then completed his Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Language at Southeastern in Durant in the mid to late 1960’s, followed by graduate studies in Mexico. He also served a 6-year stint with the Oklahoma National Guard.

 

Scottie spent his entire career in education teaching foreign language at Lawton Public Schools. He taught a year at Eisenhower High School and then at Lawton High 2 different times. He brought foreign language to the elementary level, teaching both at Whittier and Geronimo Rd., and also taught night classes at Cameron for a few years. He took his Spanish Club to contests through the years, winning numerous titles. He was named Lawton Public Schools “Teacher of the Year” for the 1993-94 school year.

 

Scottie married Janet Marie Florance on May 26, 1978. Along with teaching they did lawn care and cleanup up under the name of B&S Construction with friend Butch Teakell for many years. The couple retired to Walters in 1998 where they have built two homes and were active with the community. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church with which he made several mission trips to Mexico. He and Janet established the Walters Food Pantry and were active with the Senior Citizens Center. He was also a member of the Walters Rotary Club and was named Citizen of the Year twice and Citizen Emeritus by the Walters Chamber of Commerce. Scottie enjoyed doing woodwork, yardwork, gardening, traveling and always had a good joke to tell. He loved spending time with family and working on genealogy.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Frances; and 2 brothers, Kenneth Simpson and Sharrod Tabbytite.

 

Survivors include his wife Janet of the home; 2 sons, Burt Keith Simpson and wife Millie of Hollywood, CA and Mark Scott Simpson of Lawton, OK; 2 brothers, Tom Simpson and wife Gail of Wichita Falls, TX and Don Simpson of Walters; 2 sisters, Melba Foster and husband Chuck of Colorado Springs, CO and Brenda Tabbytite of Tulsa, OK; 5 grandchildren, Chad Simpson, Cory Simpson, Steven Thomason, Brandon Thomason and Marissa Thomason all of Lawton; a great grandchild, Kason Thomason; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
