Graveside Services at the Temple Cemetery, Temple, OK, Friday, September 1 at 2:00 p.m., Charles Coulston and Bob Bentley officiating. Family and friends are invited to visit at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday prior to the service. Sloan Jackson “Jack” Black was born to Kirby Elton and Juanita (Fortenberry) Black on October 29, 1929 at Archer City, TX and departed this life at his home in Denton, TX on August 29, 2017 at the age of 87 years and 10 months.

 

Jack grew up at Temple, OK and Ft. Stockton, TX, graduating from Temple High School in the Class of 1948. He married Ramona LeeEtta Wills on December 23, 1950 at Temple and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage. He entered the United States Air Force on January 1, 1951 and served his country honorably during the Korean War. Upon his discharge, he attended the University of Oklahoma where he received his Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.

 

Jack began a long career in oil and gas as a petroleum engineer with Humble Oil, moving his family Norman, OK to Houston, Kingsville, Midland, New Orleans, Lafayette, back to Midland then Krum and finally to Denton around the latter part of 1999. He had eventually developed some petroleum engineering courses and taught classes in the US and overseas, to include: London, Germany, Norway, Indonesia, Nigeria and Angola. Finally, he worked a couple of years with FEMA in Denton, retiring in 2008. He was a member of the Engineering Society and a member of the Singing Oaks Church of Christ in Denton. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and story-telling.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kirby and Juanita. Survivors include his wife, Ramona, of the home; 3 sons, David Kirby Black of Hemphill, TX, Steven Carl Black of Denver, CO, Spence Randall Black and wife, Gwen, also of Denver; his sister Martha Ray Knox and husband Joe of Decatur, TX; 6 grandchildren, Cory Black, Casey Black, Shea Wharton, Nathan Black, Bailey Black and Joe Black; 3 great grandchildren, Delaney, Georgia and Neveah; many other relatives and friends.
