Bill grew up southwest of Grandfield, attending school at Fort Auger and Grandfield before finishing his last 3 semesters at Chattanooga High School, graduating in the Class of 1946. He then attended and graduated from Cameron College in 1948 before joining the United States Army that year. His foreign service included time in Japan and Korea from 1949-1952. Upon his return home, he attended and graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern in 1954.

On August 6, 1954, he married Sue Jean Cavness at First Baptist Church, Hollis, OK. That same month he began his career in education, coaching football and teaching science at Anadarko, then to Pernell, Velma-Alma and Walters. In 1958, he completed his master’s degree from OU and eventually worked in administration, first as a high school principal at Walters and then served as school superintendent at Chattanooga. He then worked for the State Department of Education as an auditor for a few years before retiring.

Bill was also engaged in farming and ranching from 1962 to the present. He enjoyed playing golf and he loved watching all of his grandkids sports. Through the years you could say he was a fulltime basketball fan of Carnegie and Anadarko. He and Sue also enjoyed traveling during retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lawton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Betty Washburn and Jean Doughty; and a nephew, Mike Doughty.
