Joe Weldon Layn was born May 14, 1953, at Duncan, OK, to Kenneth Ray and Callie Marie (McCartney) Layn and departed this life in Oklahoma City, OK on November 21, 2016 at the age of 63 years, 6 months and 7 days.
Joe grew up in the Velma, OK, area and graduated from Velma-Alma High School in 1971. He then attended East Central University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology and PE in 1975 and a master’s degree in secondary education in 1978. At age 21 he began teaching biology and coaching a multitude of sports at Marlow, OK. There he met Coach Shena LaRoy Cooper and they married on June 18, 1983 in Walters. To the union 4 children were born. They made their home in Marlow until moving to Walters in 1996 where he served as Middle School Principal and Athletic Director. The family moved to Kingfisher in 2004 and Joe served as Assistant High School Principal until becoming Site Director for Chisolm Trail Technology Center in 2008.
Shena preceded him in death in 2010. He later married Terri (Eaton) Hettinger on July 13, 2014 in Kingfisher, and continued making Kingfisher their home. Joe had retired from a long career in education in 2014. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed fishing and working in the yard, and loved watching his kids play sports.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Marie Layn; his wife, Shena; his sister, Emily Faith Wilson; his father-in-law, Elroy Cooper.
Survivors include his wife, Terri Layn of the home; his son, Zackary Layn and wife Laura of Walters; 3 daughters, Shiloh Kannady and husband Zac, Shelby Jo Layn and fiancé, Gonzo De La Torre, and Shalyn Layn all of Kingfisher; his stepson Joshua Hettinger of Edmond Oklahoma; his stepdaughter, Katie Hettinger of Springfield, MO and her fiancé, Kyle Hinnershitz; his brother Ken Layn and wife Sharon of Marlow, OK; 2 sisters, Lynne Wheeler of Elmore City, OK, Mary Frances Pyle and Todd of Walters; his mother-in-law of many years, Shirley Cooper Johnson; his mother- in-law, Diane Eaton; his father-in-law, Michael Eaton; other in-laws and spouses, Jim Eaton and Maureen, Thom Eaton and Jan, Candra Marlett and Danny, Dixie Malm and Howard, Cheryl Baber and Chuck; many other beloved relatives and friends.
Funeral Service at First Baptist Church, Kingfisher, OK, Saturday, November 26 at 10:00 a.m., Rev. Scott Watkins and Rev. James Swain officiating under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home, Walters, OK. Graveside Service at the Walters Cemetery on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Viewing will be held from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Friday, Nov. 25, at Hart-Wyatt in Walters and visitation at First Baptist Church in Kingfisher on Friday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Oklahoma FCA, 3809 S. Boulevard, Edmond, OK 73013.
