Mamie Barnes, 95, Temple, OK
Funeral Services at First Presbyterian Church, Temple, 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 11, 2016, Rev. Sue Long officiating under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple with burial in the Temple Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Mamie Frances (Brantley) Barnes was born to Henry Loranz and Susie Lee (Chandler) Brantley on June 3, 1921 at Durant, OK and departed this life in Temple, OK on August 8, 2016 at the age of 95 years, 2 months and 5 days.
Mamie grew up in Bryan County, OK, near Durant until the family moved to Gould, OK in 1929. In December of 1930 they finally settled near the Red River, southeast of Temple. She finished through the 8th grade at Keeter School and then attended Temple High School, graduating in 1939. She married Ancel Edward Barnes on January 24, 1940 at the Cotton County Courthouse and they made their home at Temple.
Through the years Mamie pulled cotton, worked at Wade Sparks’ dairy, cooked at the school cafeteria and did childcare at her home for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed quilting and loved fishing with Ancel, making many trips to Lake Texoma.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Norvella Sue Cooper; her sister, Lucy Mae Hargrove; and her husband, Ancel Barnes in 1988.
Survivors include 4 children, Billie Holdbrook and husband, Tommy of Temple, Kaye Anderson of Temple, Dale Barnes of Bowie, TX and Melodee Civiletto of Burkburnett, TX; 2 sisters, Evadean Taylor of Temple and Billie Cruzan of Choctaw, OK; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
