Funeral Service at the Walters Comanche Nation Community Center, Monday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Roger Noland, Rev. Kevin Simpson and Rev. Belindia Gwoompi officiating. Interment will be in the Walters Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home. A Prayer Service will be held on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Community Center. Memorial donations can be made to the City of Walters Animal Shelter.
Preston Henry Gwoompi was born to Mitchell and Lou Belle (Ototivo) Gwoompi on November 9, 1948 at Walters and departed this life in Oklahoma City, OK on February 3, 2016 at the age of 67 years, 2 months and 25 days.
Preston grew up at Walters, graduating in the WHS Class of 1968. He was soon drafted in the United States Army, serving in Korea during the Vietnam War. He returned home to Walters where he did farm labor early on and then went into the paint and carpentry business in which he was still active. He married Shirlay Belindia Futch on July 16, 1996 at Brown Indian Baptist Church.
He loved children and his stray dog babies. He enjoyed being helpful to others, riding around the countryside, working and going to the casino. He was a proud descendent of the Comanche Code Talkers. He was a member of the Brown Church, and had been a member of the Lions Club and the Walters Chamber of Commerce. He loved to help with the Walters Car Cruz and helping with the games during the 4th of July Celebration.
Preston was preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Lou Belle Gwoompi; grandparents, Vilas and Angeline Ototivo; uncle, Clifford Ototivo, Sr.; aunt, Elizabeth Weryavah; and a niece, Angela Gwoompi.
He is survived by his wife, Shirlay Belindia Gwoompi, of the home; son, Preston Foy Gwoompi and wife Candice Kelley Gwoompi of Walters; daughters, Rebekah Hope Howell and husband Jeffery of Brunswick, GA, Angelique Kenner Gray and husband Michael Gray of Mt. View, AR; grandkids, Dylan, Meagan and Kayla Howell of Brunswick, Kenner and Cole Gray of Mt. View; his great grandkid, Waylon Howell of Brunswick; his God-daughter, Nicole Suson of Coronado, CA; adopted son, Jacob Calfy; and Preston’s special babies (4-legged), Bella, Coach and Bentleigh; his sister Rebecca Howlingwater of Walters and her family; Christal Ototivo Stillwell and husband Randy, Jerome Howlingwater Jr., Wendy Ototivo, Hayley Howlingwater; Rebecca’s grandchildren, Brooke, Shelby, Christopher, Channing, Tashina, Jadon, Emma, Tatum, Breanna, Jeryn and Sabian; great grandchildren, Myles and Cateleya; sister, Phillis Mata and husband, Tony and her family; Garrel Gwoompi and wife Rhianna, Anthony Mata and wife Kerrie, and Shelby Mata; Phillis’ grandchildren, Mariah, Angela, Nuh Nuh, Mitchell and Kimberlin; her great grandson, Brantley; brother, Lavern “Popcorn” Gwoompi and wife Lou and his family; children, Shane Watts, Kyle Codynah and wife Kenya, Henry Gwoompi Jones, Sally Coy, Jerry Coy, Jamie Coy and Sancey Barton; Lavern’s grandchildren, Dylan and Nicole; Preston’s Aunt Delores of Oklahoma City; his cousin, Billy Yackeyonny; many other relatives and friends.
