Elmer L. Nickerson

September 5, 1923 — December 13, 2015

Funeral Service at Corum Baptist Church, Corum, OK, Thursday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m., Bill Nickerson, Roy Snider and Gary Thurman officiating under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters. Interment with Military Honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. that same afternoon in the Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, OK. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home Chapel. Memorial Donations can be made to Cotton County 4-H Foundation, 301 N. Broadway, Walters, OK 73572 or Charity of Choice.  

Elmer Lee Nickerson was born to James Oscar and Tommie James (Porter) Nickerson on September 5, 1923 at Francis, OK and departed this life in Lawton, OK on December 13, 2015 at the age of 92 years, 3 months and 8 days.  


Elmer grew in Pontotoc County attending Francis School. He received his 8th grade diploma through the CCC at Purcell, OK. He then served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, starting under General Patton as a tank driver and later transported bombs and ammunition from the seaport to the airfields used by our troops and allies. He then returned home to farm labor and the oilfield, and married Nancy Annagene Dunbar on May 12, 1948 in Duncan, OK. The couple moved to Ventura County, California in August of 1949, where Elmer took a 2 year course in agriculture. While in California he managed over 3000 acres of produce production on Vujovich Brothers Ranch. The family returned to Oklahoma on June 28, 1976, making their home on Annagene family homestead in the Beaver Creek bottom of eastern Cotton County where he farmed, raised cattle, had a custom hay service and worked in the oil field.  

He was a member of the 30-30 Club Bowling League and was involved in little league baseball with his 3 sons while in California. He also enjoyed bird hunting and deer season. He was a longtime member of the Walters Roundup Club and was an honorary member of the Walters 4-H Club.  

Elmer was preceded in death by a son, David Glenn Nickerson; 2 grandsons, Kenneth Lee Nickerson and David Ray Nickerson; his parents; 6 brothers, James Edward, Charlie Jackson, Marion Calvin, Johnie Wilson, Billie Howard and his twin Delmer Leonard Nickerson.  

Survivors include his wife, Annagene, of the home; his children and their spouses, William R. and Adrianne (Bowley) Nickerson of Westminster, MD, James E. and Jeri (Bakalar) Nickerson of Grand Junction, CO, Nancy L. (Nickerson) Weir and Bruce A. of Duncan, T. Elizabeth (Nickerson) Weir and Kenneth E. of Comanche, OK; 2 brothers, Alfred Porter “Doc” Nickerson and wife Glenda of Ada, OK, Oscar Earnest Nickerson Jr. and wife, Norma Durrough of Paris, AR; 2 sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Nickerson) Fletcher and husband Isaac of Borger, TX, T. Beatrice Nickerson of Ringling, OK; 15 grandchildren, Tammy Nickerson, Brandi Reckley, William Nickerson, Lacey Stonesifer, Dianne Carpenter, Jini Spradley, Suzie Cohen, William Carlin, Samantha Carlin, Andrew Nickerson, Candice Weir, Delmer Nickerson, Terral Douglas Rather, Suzannahe Weir and Jonathan Weir; 20 great grandchildren, Shai Nickerson, Amber Larson, Danielle, Taylor and Dillon Barlow, Paul Reckley, Kish, Caleb and Asher Carpenter, Zoe, Andrew and Lilyanna Spradley, Lincoln and Tucker Cõhen, Isaac and Gideon Carlin, Xzavier, Izaiah and Hunter Nickerson, Cameron Dotson and Blake Nickerson; other relatives and a host of friends.
