Martha E. (Tunnell) Hayes was born to John Luther and Maggie Ada (Smith) Tunnell on March 22, 1922 at Temple, OK and departed this life in Lawton, OK on February 4, 2013 at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 13 days. Martha grew up at Temple, OK. She married William Robert "W.R." Hayes on September 18, 1939 at Sayre, OK. They made their home southwest of Walters until moving northeast of town around 1950. Beyond working on the farm she worked as an interior decorator hanging wallpaper. She eventually went to work at the Haggar slacks factory in Temple where she was employed for 20 plus years. She was a member of the Walters Round Up. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, picking up pecans, gardening, taking care of the lawn and working on her rent houses. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, W.R., on January 21, 1986; 2 brothers, Frank and Grady Tunnell; 2 sisters, Virgie Eidson and Ollie Orbison. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nita and Joe Farley of Lawton, OK; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Sue Hayes of Walters; 4 grandchildren, Ronnie Sartain and Kari of Lawton, Lyman Sartain and Carla of Lawton, Kristie Sells and Scotty of Carnegie, Scottie Hayes and Yolanda of Walters; 7 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
