Dorothy Virginia Stogner Shaw, 89, died peacefully in her sleep following surgery for hip replacement on Thursday, Dec. 1st, 2011, at Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton, Ok. Mrs. Shaw was born May 18, 1922, in Temple, Oklahoma, to Lou Allie Jones and John Newton Stogner, who had come to Oklahoma from Taylor, Mississippi. She was the second youngest of 8 children. Mrs. Shaw attended school at Temple, where she graduated valedictorian of her class. She was preceded in death on April 7, 2003 by her husband, Vermont Shaw of Walters, whom she married on May 25, 1939. Together they raised sons Gary and Stan. Stan passed away on April 14, 2009. Mrs. Shaw told her grandchildren and great-grandchildren stories of her and Vermont's life together, traveling in years prior to World War II to Las Vegas and Phoenix, where Vermont worked as a surveyor. They opened a confectionary together in the Wichita Mountains where they hosted Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Dorothy and Vermont operated two convenience stores in Walters, including Shaw's Hi-Neighbor. In their later years they relocated for a time to Northfield, Minnesota for Vermont's work. Dorothy served as City Clerk in Walters for many years and later as treasurer of the Walters Lumber Company. At home she was an avid reader, frequently completing long novels and biographies in just a day. She volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels. She is survived by son Gary and daughters-in-law Vicki (Tulsa) and Donna (Graham, Texas) as well as grandchildren Greg (Seattle), Todd (Grand Prairie, Tx), Mike (Broken Arrow) , Scott (Tulsa) and Tiffany Browne (Oak Point, Texas). Her great-grandchildren are Ciara, Ryan and Ella, Lauren and Evan, and Lauren and Emily. She had one great-great granddaughter, Araela Lynn.
