Mildred Mae Whiteley was born to Franklin M. and Alta Mae (Hubbell) Whiteley, April 15, 1918, in Cotton County, OK, and departed this life on August 2, 2011, in Lawton, OK, at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 17 days. Mildred grew up in the Temple area, one of nine children. She graduated from Temple High School in 1936 and went on to attend nursing school at Scott and White in Temple, Texas, becoming a registered nurse. With 4 brothers and a brother-in-law in the service she decided to join the U.S. Army Nurses Corps. She served honorably in Japan and the Philippines for 3 years during WWII, receiving a number of citations and commendations. She returned home and worked as a Surgical Nurse at Weeden Hospital in Duncan for many years. After retiring she moved to West Point, Texas to live with a sister, before moving back to Lawton and eventually settling in the Lawton/Fort Sill Veterans Center. Miss Whitely was a member of First Baptist Church, Duncan, OK, for many years. She enjoyed working in the yard, sewing, reading, and traveling. Survivors include 2 brothers and a sister-in-law, Ralph Whiteley, Lou and Ruth Whiteley all of Lawton, OK; a special niece, Jimmie Scruggs of Lawton; numerous other nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
