Don Wesley Best was born to Fred Alvis and Preppa Ella (Farr) Best in Conception Junction, Missouri on December 1, 1919 and departed this life in Lawton, Oklahoma on March 17, 2010 at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 16 days. Don grew up in the Hulen, OK and Walters, OK areas and attended the Hulen and the Plainview schools. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) before joining the U.S. Navy. He served with the Seabees during WWII during the Pacific Campaign. After the service he married Doyle Virginia Smith in Duncan, OK on September 7, 1946, and she passed away on April 27, 2006. He worked for Cotton Electric before and after the Navy and as a warehouse supervisor with the Civil Service at Ft. Sill before retiring after 20 plus years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Walters. He was president of the Walters Senior Citizens Center and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed dominos, watching sports, especially OU football, going out to eat with his family and spending time with his granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife Doyle Virginia Best, an infant daughter, 3 brothers; Ted, Richard and Zell Best and 4 sisters; Susie Ragland, Oakie Hilbert, Gwendolyn Hilbert and Evelyn Best. Survivors include a son; Derek Best of Walters, OK, a daughter and son-in-law; Lisa and Brent Mumford of Walters, a brother; Troy Best of Tulsa, 2 sisters; Eulalia Arnold of Broken Arrow, OK and Nadine Booher of Walters, 2 granddaughters and husbands; Ashley and Bobby Shortt of Walters and Heather and Casey Sides of Walters, 3 great-grandsons; Crue and Creed Shortt and Cash Sides, many other family members and friends.
