Flora Gene (Sparks) Flynn went to be with her Heavenly Father, family and friends in the early hours of Wednesday, March 27, 2019 in Oklahoma City, OK. She was 94. A graveside service will be held for Flora on April 10, 2019 at the Old Velma Cemetery, Velma, OK at 2:00 p.m. with Flora’s brother, Nolen Sparks, officiating.
Flora was born August 16, 1924 in Comanche, OK. She was class valedictorian of Empire High School Class of 1942. On January 23, 1943, she married her soul mate, Gilbert Chester “Pete” Flynn, shortly before he was shipped overseas for WWII. After his return, Flora moved around wherever her husband’s job took him. They lived in at least 14 different places in 9 states before they retired to Willow Springs, near Mead, OK.
Flora went to business college and worked at different places as a secretary, but is probably remembered best as being a loving, caring, wife, mother and grandmother. She was a Christian and Southern Baptist, belonging to Streetman Road Baptist Church, Mead, OK near her home. Flora was always active in the church as a teacher, choir member and business committee member.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Gilbert Chester Flynn; her mother, Beulah Anita (Benson) Sparks; her father, Casius Edward Sparks; her stepmother, Ida Leatrice (Benson) Sparks; her sister, Sammie Joy (Sparks) Smith; and her brother-in-law, Donald Aubrey Smith.
Flora is survived by her daughter, Beverly Ann Flynn of the home; her son, Billy Wayne Flynn and wife Dianna of Mulvane, KS; her brothers, Nolen Edward Sparks of Baton Rouge, LA and Darrell Lynn Sparks and wife Judy of Starkville, MS; her sisters, Marybeth (Sparks) Shuttlesworth and husband Gerald of Pharr, TX, Carol Sue (Sparks) Rutter and husband Nelson, DeAnne (Sparks) Mobley, Sylvia Ion (Sparks) Shugart and husband Jerry all of Clovis, NM; she is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Billy W. Flynn II, Brandon E. Flynn and Darla L. (Flynn) Dismuke; as well as, several great and great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters, OK on Tuesday, April 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
