Mary Lee (Gover) Whitecotton was born to Walter Edward and Gertie Lee (Allen) Gover on August 19, 1941 and departed this life at her home in rural Hastings, OK on December 14, 2021 at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 25 days.

Mary grew up at Hastings where she attended school until her senior year, graduating from Waurika High School in 1959. She went on to attend some college at OU and then married Darvin Ray Whitecotton on November 4, 1961 in Amarillo, TX. They made their home in Amarillo for 5 years and then to Denver for 2 years before returning to Hastings upon the death of her dad in 1968.

Mary worked at Haggar’s, then Great Plains Hospital before going to work at Luckinbill’s in the early 1990’s. She later worked at the Waurika Nursing Home and more recently served as a substitute teacher at Waurika Public Schools.

She was a member of Hastings Baptist Church and for the past few years has attended Hastings Church of Christ with her husband and son. She loved attending church and reading her Bible. Mary loved all things Elvis, her dogs and of course loved her kids, grandkids and great grands. She enjoyed walking at the lake, traveling and visiting people, she enjoyed dealing in antiques, and was particular about her hair. She loved taking pictures, always catching people at their worst. She thought you should “kill people with kindness” and loved taking care of others before herself. She absolutely loved subbing and spending time with the youth.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Gertie Lee Gover.

She is survived by her husband, Darvin, of the home; 2 daughters, Debbie Thompson of Sapulpa, OK and Mary Kaye Cuba and Kilven of Palestine, TX; a son, Darvin Ray Whitecotton, Jr. of Salina, KS; a sister, Anna Christine Bridges of Marlow, OK; 5 grandchildren, Kyle Whitecotton and Libby, Jessica Whitecotton and Ethan Reimer, Trista Whitecotton, Ashley Nacke and Mike, Aaron Lambert and Lisa Pich; a bonus grandkid, Deyra Albaez; 7 great grandkids plus one on the way; 1 great-great grandkid; other relatives and many friends.
