Mike grew up in Walters and graduated from Walters High School in 1972. He married Liz Hathaway in 1975 and they made their home in Edmond, Oklahoma where Mike was employed by Allied Hussman. They later returned to Walters and Mike began his career at Red River Technology in Duncan, Oklahoma as an HVAC instructor for 23 years.
Mike then embarked on a new endeavor and obtained his Master of Education because he felt the need and desire to help kids with their future through education. There was nothing he couldn’t do or repair. His love of learning and teaching meant so much to him. He was inspired by learning and in turn inspired others. He thoroughly enjoyed working with students, and it was important to him to convey to them that anything could be achieved through hard work. He believed a good education could change anyone and a good teacher could change everything.
Mike retired from Walters Public Schools and began a new chapter as Right-of-Way Supervisor at Cotton Electric Cooperative and retired from there in 2016. Through the years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, racing horses, boating, camping, and entertaining nieces and nephews. His loyalty and energy were limitless. He will be greatly missed by all.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Gary Darnell; a sister, Becky Darnell Tielke; and father-in-law, Donald Hathaway.
Survivors include his wife, Liz, son Brian Darnell, mother-in-law Carol Hathaway, sister-in-law Julie Hathaway, two brothers and their wives, David and Lanorma Darnell and Darrell and Stacy Darnell, nephews and nieces, Brandon Reed, Anthony Reed, Ashley and Austin Johnson, Colt Darnell and Crystal, Mandy Tielke, Gabe Tielke, many grand nieces and nephews, and special friends Mike and Holly Ottinger.
