Nadine (Adkison) Irey was born on the family farm northeast of Temple, Cotton County, Oklahoma on February 12, 1927 to Ivan Otto “Stog” and Nettie Julia (Gober) Adkison. It was a cold, rainy night and J.P. Norman, their neighbor, went to town to get the doctor. So, he nicknamed Nadine, “Trouble”. She wanted to go to school so much that the teacher let her start early. She finished the eighth grade at Pioneer School, then transferred to Temple High School where she graduated in 1944. Mr. Boren, a local insurance agent, asked the superintendent if he had someone to recommend for office work. He recommenced Nadine and she started to work for him. After Mr. Boren died, Clyde McClenney and David Rodolph purchased the business, Clyde said that Nadine taught them the insurance business.
On April 25, 1947 Nadine married Bill Irey, son of H. E. “Pat” and Clara (Bracken) Irey. Bill was just home from the Navy and was working for Trissler and Bizzell as a farm implement mechanic. They bought a three-room house on the north side of Temple. Nadine was a very good cook, seamstress, and homemaker. Judy, their daughter, was born in 1948 and Nadine quit work to take care of her and became a wonderful Mom. She was always very patient and encouraging. Nadine, with the help of her mother, made Judy many beautiful clothes, as well as clothes for herself and shirts for Bill. She also did canning, and was a member of the Pioneer Home Extension Club.
When Judy stated to school, Nadine went to work for Elmer Graham. They continued to live in the little three-room house until Judy was ready for second grade. Then, they moved to a large house near downtown Temple until Bill got a job with Halliburton. They moved to Duncan for a few months and then to Farmington, New Mexico for two years. While in New Mexico, Nadine was a secretary for a Texaco geologist. She got the job because she knew how to write land descriptions which she had learned from Clyde McClenny while working for Mr. Graham.
When they moved back to Duncan, Nadine went to work for Darvis Craig, a CPA. When he retired, Nadine set up an office for the Price Brothers and worked there until she retired. After retiring, Nadine divided all the family photos by family, wrote names on the pictures and put them in albums. She also started sewing again as a hobby. Her favorite thing to make was baby quilts and she supplied many family members and friends with one. She also liked machine applique and machine embroidery. She helped Bill with the Craft Club and later joined the Wichita Mountains Quilt Guild and the Stitching Memories Quilt Guild with Judy. Due to arthritis in her hands, she had to give up sewing and crafts. She did a lot of reading and crossword puzzles. She liked game shows on TV.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Irey in 2015; parents, “Stog” and Nettie Adkison; and an older sister who died as an infant, Genevieve Adkison. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Irey.
