Phillip R. Scott

Phillip Reed Scott was born to Kay L. and Marguerite Florine (Clark) Scott on January 14, 1943 in Waurika, Oklahoma and departed this life in Duncan, Oklahoma on March 17, 2025 at the age of 82 years, 2 months, and 3 days.

Phil grew up in Waurika and enjoyed playing center and linebacker on the Eagles football team. He was also very active in 4-H and was on the 4-H National Champion Livestock Judging Team. He graduated from Waurika High School in 1961, then attended Oklahoma State University for 2 years where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He transferred to the University of Oklahoma graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma School of Law in 1969 and was sworn in to the Oklahoma Bar Association on April 1, 1969. While in law school, he joined the US Army ROTC, became the Brigade Commander, was named the Outstanding ROTC Graduate, and received the General Hal Muldrow Pistol.

He married Patricia Evelyn (Bradley) Scott on August 26, 1967. Phil served his country honorably from 1969-1971 in the United States Army as a lawyer stationed at Ft. Benning, Ft. Holabird, Ft. Knox and served a tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. He was awarded two Army Commendation medals and two Bronze Stars during his service. He returned to Jefferson County in 1971 and became the Assistant District Attorney for Joe Humphrey and then opened his own practice in 1973. During his career, he also served as City Attorney for Waurika, Ryan, Temple, Terral, and Randlett. In 2022 he retired after 52 years of practicing law.

Through the years, Phil remained active in the community he loved by serving on the Waurika School Board, the Master Conservancy Board, and the Jefferson County Hospital Board. He was an active member of the First Christian Church, the Rotary Club and the Waurika Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, and watching his grandsons participate in all of their activities. He truly loved ranch life where he spent all of his free time.

He was preceded in death by his son, Justin Brett Scott in 2017; his parents, Kay and Marguerite Scott; his in-laws, W.D. “Bill” and Margaret Bradley; his brothers, Jack Scott and Gary Scott.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Scott of the home; his daughter, Nicole Scott and Josh Mathis of Alexandria, VA; his son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Elizabeth Scott of Waurika; grandsons, Lodge Scott and wife Anna of Waurika and Houston Reed Scott of Waurika; a great granddaughter due in April; his brother-in-law, Hank Bradley and wife Terry of Oklahoma City; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Waurika on Monday, March 24 at 2:00 pm after which there will be a reception at the First Christian Church Family Life Center. Pastors Bryce Bohot and Curtis Plant will officiate under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 23 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the First Christian Church Family Life Center in Waurika.
