He spent his childhood in the Ahpeatone community west of Walters, OK. Rick graduated valedictorian in 1969 from Walters High School and attended Cameron College in Lawton and Central State University in Edmond, studying sociology. He got his Master’s in Education at Oklahoma University.

Rick went on wheat harvest for several years with his dad, brother Mack and uncles, Wes and Kent from Walters to Montana. He taught school some, then was a down hole tool supervisor for Baker Tool for several years. Bud, as most people called him, had his own anchor business for oil rigs and raised fighting chickens at the same time in Norman, OK.

He married Dockey Killian around 2005 and farmed his parent’s land in Cotton County, OK for a number of years until Dockey passed on July 9, 2009. Rick then worked in Tulsa for Oklahoma DHS as a social worker retrieving abused and abandoned children for several years. Budman retired from there in 2014 and began his retirement years caring for his aging mother in Edmond, OK. She passed away April of 2017. After his mother’s death, Budman couldn’t stop helping others, he took in his cousin Connie Hudman. Connie and Budman’s health were both challenging, but they helped each other for over 5 years. He played his guitar (the real love of his life) and sang to anybody that would listen. He wrote and sang several songs like, “Tractor Ridin’ Blues” and “Plantin’ Cotton."

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Wanda Scherler, and his sister-in-law, Cathy Gandy Scherler.

Survivors include his brother, Mack David Scherler of Edmond, OK; his nephew, Jason Scherler of Edmond; his niece, Jennifer Breshears and husband Brian of Oklahoma City and their son, his great nephew, Gunnar David Breshears of Oklahoma City; several cousins and friends.
