Valeria (Wood) Horschler was born on August 20, 1933 in Waurika, Oklahoma to James Roy Wood and Esther (Griffith) Wood. She passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020 in Wichita Falls, Texas at the age of 87 years, 2 months, and 17 days.
Valeria grew up living and going to school both in Addington, Oklahoma and California. Babe, as she was called affectionately all her life by her parents and brothers, loved living close to her relatives in both states, especially her double cousin, Don Wood, in Chowchilla, California.
On February 27, 1949, she married Howard Horschler, a farmer-rancher from Oklahoma. (In 2019, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.) He brought her back to his farm in the Taylor Community, and they made friendships lasting a lifetime with other young farming couples. Valeria contributed greatly to the farming operation, learning to be an excellent cowboy, tractor and truck driver, and animal rescuer.
To their union, three children were born. Valeria dedicated her life to her family and to her children. She was the excellent seamstress making her daughters’ clothes, the supporter of school, church, and 4-H projects, the one packing and unpacking for all those water-skiing camping trips, the driver to weekly piano lessons, and the most enthusiastic cheerleader ever for sporting events –including attending as many games as she could of her granddaughters’ Temple Tiger teams!
When her children were older, she owned and operated Horschler Tax Service in Temple, Oklahoma. Not only was she successful and accomplished in her business dealings, but she greatly enjoyed helping her clients.
Valeria served as her church pianist/organist, children Sabbath School teacher, and church treasurer. She loved to travel, work in her flower gardens, garage sale and shop with friends, read, and watch on TV all sports events, especially women’s college and professional basketball and softball, and Little League baseball. She made the best whole wheat bread ever! And, she loved being Meme to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—always making time to scratch backs, go on fun excursions, and explore the outdoors.
Meme will forever be in all our hearts, and we look forward to being with her again when she is raised from her resting place when Jesus comes again.
Valeria is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard, her son Danny, her two brothers Clinton and Bob Wood, and her nephew Howard Lewis.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Doris Ann Sorenson and husband Chris of Temple, Oklahoma and Debby Murach and husband Scott of Benbrook, Texas; 5 grandchildren, Misty Akcil and husband Halil, Marena McCorbin and husband Chris, Robby Bagwell and wife Alicia, Libby Whitecotton and husband Kyle, and Molley Blades-Blevins and husband Chase; 6 great-grandchildren, Christian Lee, Leyla and Mina Akcil, Avery Whitecotton, Bash Blades-Blevins, and Sedona Bagwell; 1 sister-in-law Melva Wood; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families; and 1 ornery, but loved cat Bella.
