Funeral Services at First Baptist Church, Temple, OK on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., Charles Turney officiating with burial in the Temple Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Temple.
Velma Clytee (Dikes) Burton was born to Fred Ellis and Lona Olena (Thompson) Dikes on March 16, 1920 at Hastings, OK and departed this life in Temple, OK on November 24, 2018 at the age of 98 years, 8 months and 8 days.
Clytee grew up at Hastings where she attended grade school. She later received her GED from Port Barre High School in Port Barre, LA. She married M.E. “Gene” Burton, Sr. on November 25, 1939 at Temple and to the union a son, Gene Jr., was born. They made their home 3 miles east of Temple where they were engaged in farming until purchasing a gas station and moving to town. She began working for Haggar Slacks from its opening in 1957 to 1971. The couple made their home in Southeast Texas for a time where she worked for Orange Casket Company and also spent several years in Louisiana before returning to Temple in 1981.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Temple. Clytee and Gene enjoyed vacations and playing Skip-Bo and other card games with family and friends. She also enjoyed reading, quilting, cooking, doing yardwork and playing Bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene Sr. in 1992; her son, Gene Jr. in 2015; 2 brothers, Clifford Dikes and Orville Dikes; her sister and brother-in-law, Audean and Glen Norman.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, LaRue Burton of Lebanon, OK; 3 grandchildren, Kurt Burton of Healdton, OK, Kris Burton of Benbrook, TX and Kindal Rector of Springtown, TX; 4 great grandchildren, Jennifer Nesmith and husband Jeremy of Ardmore, OK, Bradley Burton of Wilson, OK, Collin Rector and Ashland Rector both of Springtown, TX; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
